13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.Last Wednesday Matt led us through the first half of chapter 3 where we discovered just how difficult it can be to believe the gospel. We found that our desire for human means often get in the way of godly means. Our sinful natures will often times take over during times of crisis, strain or unhappiness because we believe in the law of human attainment rather than the transforming power of believing the gospel.
Not only were we convicted to make Jesus Christ our one and only savior, but we were also encouraged to make Him the one and only object of our faith. When we surrender control of our lives to our Savior and allow his gospel to infiltrate our hearts he will become our sole purpose for living.
Paul challenged the Galatians with these questions, “After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?” How many challenge your heart and get at the root of what you worship? Your desires or His desires.
Our Savior’s desire was to become a curse for us, to become a “God damned” Savior. He did so to redeem us from the life of the cursed, from the life of one damned by the law. Are you living the life of the cursed? Or are you living the life that was given to you by the cursed man hung upon a tree?
