22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman.
28Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
31So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
We discovered what it is to be born free, and what is to be born into bondage as we looked at our text last week. The discovery that “the Gospel reverses the worlds values” came has no surprise to those of us who have experienced God’s immense grace. Though we have all been born into sin, under the law and completely incapable of redeeming ourselves, we have also found that being sons of Abraham or being daughters of Sarah is only possible by being born into freedom.
This freedom comes through the salvation brought to us by faith alone in the seed of promise (Galatians 3:16), Jesus Christ. It is through our birth into this holy covenant, being adopted as free sons and daughters of the living God, that we enjoy the riches of freedom while shedding the shackles of slavery.
Tim Keller reminds us, “if the gospel is true, it does not matter who you are or were. You may be a spiritual and moral outcast, as marginal as the single barren woman (Galatians 4:27) was in those ancient days. It does not matter. You will bear fruit, the kind that lasts.” Do you ever feel like a failure or that you disappoint those around you? Are you living a life according the promise given to Abraham? Are you living your life for Christ and for the gift of the gospel? Surrender your heart to that promise. Surrender your failures to the Lord. Surrender your life to Christ and you will experience freedom never known
